okay, forget the fact that i’m reading articles about marketing to teens for a minute. i know that doesn’t interest people not in advertising. i’m a loser, i know.

now, listen to this statistic i picked out of one such article today at work, from mediaweek magazine, which i’d link if you didn’t have to subscribe to read online anyway. here goes:

one thing teens today share with teens of the past is the fact that they are influenced by their favorite artists. but forget about songs that talk about the hot boy or girl at the next locker. hip-hop is a veritable laundry list of hot products. there have been 1,050 references to about 66 different brands in songs ranked in the top 20 through the beginning of october, according to san francisco-based brand consultancy lucjam…

that’s unbelievable! in roughly one month’s time? i don’t even know what to say in response, i can hardly digest that figure. so i will just tack on one of the next lines in the article which i found funny and awfully brash and sweeping as far as generalizations go:

“hip hop is incredibly materialistic, making it a good place to talk about materialistic things,” says lucien james, president of lucjam…

haha. what an ass.

[now hearing this: some surprisingly non-materialistic yet definitely hip hop tunes from el-p.]

light house – william monahan – 5 stars

a dear and darling friend of mine remarked to me the other day something about how i seemed to be awfully handy and playful with words. i can’t recall the exact phrase, but it was definitely complimentary. then she asked if i was aware of this or if it was just the way i am.

i went on to describe to her how she had actually struck the very center of a lot of my passions. how i absolutely adored and devoured words, delighted in their usages and variety; and how that drove my constant reading, as well as my desire to write this webpage. to be the verbal ninja i aspire to be, i must constantly seek out new weapons and practice my skills. which is also why i think i love the coens’ movies so much, because they seem to be high masters of wielding all forms of vernacular.

so it is too with this book, and why i loved it from start to finish. monahan swings and swishes his finely sharpened word choice through the air with the deft skill of a literary samurai. his arsenal of vocabulary is so varied and extensive that it isn’t just about choosing a suitable method of attack, but pinpointing the most stylish and exciting ways to come at each bit of dialogue or exposition, adding flourishes of language and literary reference whenever possible to make for the absolute most entertaining execution.

as only a novice myself, i will fully admit to reaching for the dictionary a number of times, and having a sense that many of the same sort of intricacies that delighted me when i did catch them were probably over my head as well — but such is the path of learning. we train with the masters that are obviously much more skilled than we are in the hopes that some day we will rise to meet them; and this was not only an adept master but a hysterical one as well, so i can’t recommend him enough. i plan to return to this one myself someday in the hopes that i come even closer to meeting its challenge, and you’d be doing yourself a very large favor to join me.

let me tell you a little bit about my weekend.

friday i went out with a bunch of fellows and a couple very nice girls. we went to one bar that got too expensive after happy hour, then left for a cheaper bar. at the cheaper bar we enjoyed a few rounds, then were offered free promotional margaritas courtesy of el tesoro (the only super-premium tequila that is still made by hand, you know), which were strong and delicious. then somehow we scammed a second round of promotional drinks out of them as well. then we walked home and had wine. then one of the very nice girls decided to crash at my place instead of on the fellows’ uncomfortable couch. it was a very lovely night.

saturday we got some good food, and i was tired. i framed some posters, which look very nice now and will look great on the wall once i buy wire to hang them with, and i was still tired. i visited the very nice girl who was staying at the fellows’ place, but promised my roommate i’d go to a party with him and eventually did so. the party turned out to be about 8 people sitting around being dull. i wished i had stayed with the very nice girl. but once i promptly returned home, i did set my clock back an hour and then sleep for 11, making up for the 3 or so from the previous night.

sunday i went to the beach. it’s late october and i was playing frisbee in the sand. i like california. later on after dinner and some relaxing, i went to say goodbye to the very nice girl, but ended up letting her crash here again, to my surprise and delight. 4 hours of sleep might not be much, but the girl was very nice and it was okay.

this morning i woke up and drove her back to the fellows’ place who would later drive her to the airport to go back home, 8 time zones away. so i said goodbye to the very nice girl and spent the rest of the day trying not to fall asleep. i watched harold and maude tonight with my roommate, which was weird, and now i think that i am going to go to bed, this time without even the slight chance of there being any very nice girls involved.

it was a good weekend. i imagine there are plenty of very nice girls in the world (and some very nice boys too, those ladies reading this), but i also imagine that in a normal lifetime, only so many of their paths will cross ours. only so many glances will be exchanged unfrivolously. only so many will really laugh at our jokes, or think we look cute in spectacles. and only so many will depart again with smiles from both sides. so tonight i think i’ll go to sleep just pleased to have shared something with someone who seemed so very nice. goodnight.

the drive in today was normal, a semi-clear sunny day. then i turned around a bend as i approached marina del rey, and drove into a wall of fog. it was really abrupt and creepy, i thought maybe there was a storm or a forest fire (yes i know there is no forest nearby), because this was some very sudden, very thick fog. so thick i could feel it when i got out of my car.

now the sun’s high in the sky, and the fog is so thick that although it’s almost the middle of the day, the sky is the color of a sunrise. it’s glowing reddish orange and making any parts of the office with windows look creepy. i stepped outside for a moment to check it out and felt a distinct twinge of apocalypse in the air. like there’s a massive fire somewhere and it’s spreading and reflecting in the sky.

i wish i could go outside and play right now.

i feel so abused and betrayed. sour patch kids used to be my favorite candy, bar none. but they changed the packaging, and apparently the recipe too, because these kids, they’re hardly sour at all anymore. what happened kids? did someone’s mother decide her children’s taste buds shouldn’t be eroded by your tartly delicious sour-powder, and put an end to my favorite candy-aisle treat, seemingly forever?

well to that person i say damn you. damn you to hell. i hate you perhaps more than i hate the person who similarly betrayed me by discontinuing the old version of laffy taffy that came in squares of about 10 different varieties, and had terrible, awful, wonderful jokes inside every wrapper. i hate you even more than i hate good and plenties, the worst candy of all, and frankly i hope you fall down a well. preferably with alligators at the bottom that are hungry and sociopathic, so they don’t just eat you, they rip you up a lot first. then eat you, but slowly so that you are more scared.

anyone want the rest of these sour patch kids?

intolerable cruelty – 5 stars

i’m on a hell of a run, movie-wise. lost in translation, kill bill, and now this… it’s all too good to be true.

it seemed like everyone who would have wanted to see this with me saw it before i did, and after running out of options i just went out and saw it alone last night (at the los feliz 3, which i discovered has 7.50 admission and 4.50 matinees! another winning revelation; i will be back there).

i was unimpressed by the acclaim from everyone i had asked for a verdict from though, and i was getting a little scared that my beloved coens might let me down this time. the general feeling was, ‘pretty good, but obviously a mainstream attempt from them’, which isn’t exactly glowing.

well i’m here to tell anyone who hasn’t seen it yet to forget all that and go see it. it IS great. it IS hilarious. it IS full of the well-written and complex dialogue that makes me sit up and grin with delight, which i’ve come to expect from these guys. and george clooney plays a great character. frankly, i loved it, recommend it, will loan it to you when i get the DVD, etc. and the Zeta is fiiiiiine. i think i’m only ever going to refer to her as ‘the Zeta’ from now on, because that sounds funny. like the code name of some top secret project.

cursive concert tonight! very excited about that. if they play the wussy version of ‘radiator hums’ again i’m going to slap tim kasher like the whiny emo bitch he is though. and after that, perhaps i will steal the Zeta technology from the CIA and sell it to the russians.

vegas, man. the me of two years back would have scowled at the me of now for saying it, but i certainly like going there now. by the second afternoon i was glad i was leaving after only one night, but the one night was a damn good one.

rolled in around 9:30pm, and somehow was nominated the beer car. made the mistake of asking our 20 year old companion to help carry our several armloads of drinks to the counter, and since she wasn’t of age, none of us could buy anything. how technical and dumb is that. part of me wanted to bring her back to the store after we had to go down the street somewhere else and not make the same mistake, then stand outside the first place watching her chug a beer. instead, we just loaded up and went to our hotel room and had several before hitting the strip. perhaps that was the best way to go anyway, cause i was hurting for a drink after the freeway traffic.

left in high spirits though and walked through a few casinos before deciding on one. several people lost fast so we quickly decided on another one. after realizing that on friday night the lowest roulette table we could find was 10 bucks, we sucked it up and sat in caesar’s. i played some lucky numbers and left up 60 dollars, dan lost 100. awww.

since half the party had left already, the remaining 6 of 12 tried leaving caesar’s and got lost in the weird casino layout. after going upstairs for some reason and finding ourselves among a lot of empty banquet rooms, we took an exit door and ended up in the back employee passages of the casino’s underbelly. the walls and floors were all bare white and there was not a soul anywhere, just doors. it felt like the secret passages of the matrix, and us with no keymaster. we must have walked for a good 15 minutes down hallways before ending up in the back at some obscure employee entrance that meant we had to walk around the entire outer edge of the casino to get back to the street. which we did, drunk and laughing, at 4am.

stopping to rest after all that walking, charlotte decided to kick dan into a fountain while he was kneeling down beside it, which left him soaked, her soaked after he chased her down to hug her, and him with a big footprint on his back. he looked as if he were about to shiver to death sitting in the air-conditioned fatburger on the way home. to those of us who stayed perfectly dry, this was all quite hilarious.

sleep at 5:30am, up at 11:30, back down to gamble a little more. i could have walked away 40 more ahead after a table called to me (my numbers came up 5 times before i sat down, and several more after), but kept playing and stopped only 3 ahead. it would have been nice to have made over 100 dollars off the trip but i was just happy not to have lost. after food, josh and i made it home in a killer 3.5 hours, and i went to some bars with jen and michael.

yesterday i lounged and watched akira with josh, which was very strange and as most anime i’ve seen, lacking a very decipherable plot line. very visually impressive though, so who needs to know what the hell is going on.

great weekend all in all. monday is harsh not only because i’m tired and had so much fun friday and saturday, but because apparently i left the dome light on in my car since i unpacked it saturday, and having not driven at all sunday, my battery was drained when i tried to go to work. i had to sit around the garage waiting for someone who could give me a jump (thanks and nice to meet you, ali). will it start when i try to go home today? who knows!

have to get these out into the open before i move on into my glorious weekend — otherwise i’ll probably never remember.

mates of stateour constant concern – 3 stars

(mates of state live – really good)

first the show. i saw them first last year without having really listened to them at any point, but willing to go check them out because i trust joe. he was right about rilo kiley so he might be onto something. that show blew my mind, as it turned out, which is tough for a band to do when i don’t know any of their music to follow along with. so they came back to town, i went back to the show, and this time i picked up a cd.

the sound is unique for sure, because i don’t know many other boy/girl husband/wife keyboard/drum bands, and unique in a good way. the layered vocals reward you for paying attention and the pace switches up often enough to make you feel like dancing between the sad little pauses. i could see someone writing them off as too carnivalesque though after listening to this cd, which i guess i can’t entirely disagree with. only then you’d be likely to miss their live show, unfortunately for you, which takes all the fun songs from their repertoire and turns up the energy a few notches. something about the sight of two people you know are married on stage throwing themselves into songs while half-facing you, half-facing each other — it just makes the whole experience a very positive feeling i would recommend even if you think the cd is ‘just okay’.

(although if i had to repeat this particular show, i would step outside for the band ‘i am the world trade center’. i’m really sorry guys, but pounding electronic beats and a machine that makes a guy’s voice sound like a robot’s voice when he sings does not mean your band is good, even if the girl half of your duo is really cute when she smiles. in all honesty, i couldn’t wait for you to get off stage.)

hey mercedesloses control – 5 stars

i will admit to putting this cd into my stereo the first time and thinking, ‘oh no. they’re gone. it’s over,’ and being sad, because this cd sounded too polished and clean to be the same band i loved for their odd layered guitars and intricate drum fills, and an overall sound that was much more thick with details than a lot of my other favorites. i know that’s partially me wishing hey mercedes was still braid, but that’s always going to linger as long as it’s the same voice singing over a band that’s obviously evolved.

the second time through though, after i was done expecting it to be something it wouldn’t be, i heard it more for what it was, and realized it wasn’t over at all. hey mercedes is growing its own muscles, is all. after my hesitation to accept a tighter, smoother production, the loveable elements were all still there, and maybe even better than before. the lyrical wordplay is still intact, the guitars my sound glossier but they’re still churning out deep chords mixed with admirable picking, and the voice is just as creamy and intoxicating. now i can’t stop listening to it just like the last one.

i know i’m never going to get another frame and canvas; but once i accept that i can start getting really excited about loses control and everything that will hopefully come after it. and this is still going to make my top five for this year, for sure.

and since i’m so nice, and so you can test both cd’s, and for neglecting the pay day song last time around, leaving you with mc chris a little longer than necessary, this time you get two. police police me from hey mercedes and halves and have-nots from mates of state. rock and roll, i’m off to vegas halfway through tomorrow.

i don’t understand something, and it bothers me more and more every time i think about it. maybe someone can explain this or help me figure out how to work around it.

i am a young single male who likes to go to concerts at local small venues. theoretically, when i go to a show at a place like the troubadour or the fonda or anything else (like the mates of state show last saturday), i am surrounded by the exact kind of people i would like to be friends with — or meet and charm and date and seduce and all that. they obviously have similar tastes by the mere fact of being present, are often dressed in the style i’m most attracted to, and most importantly, i know they like doing what i like doing because they’re already doing it right next to me. this should be the ideal way to meet new people.

instead, i stand huddled between all these strangers who seem intent on pretending not to make eye contact, not to be listening to each other’s conversations, and most importantly not to want to talk to anyone but the friends they’ve formed protective little bubbles in the crowd next to already. i think it’s the only time i could possibly be standing rubbing elbows with someone for two hours without having to say a word to them, and with it seemingly acceptable to both parties. the show ends, everyone flees the room like it’s about to be fumigated, and i go home, alone.

then on other nights, there is no show, so i go to a pub for a few beers and hoping to maybe engage some new people. i sit with my buddies and scan the crowd, and see several desparate unattractive people trying too hard to get attention, and a handful of overly made-up people that are good-looking, already getting more attention than they ever seem to want. so i tell myself no, no one here strikes me in any way, so why bother the awkwardness of trying to force a conversation with someone i very apparently have nothing in common with. not surprisingly i still go home, alone.

so how can there be no better way to overlap the two situations: one where i’m supposed to try to meet new kids, but am surrounded by the wrong crowd, and one where i’m in just the right crowd, and no one wants to be met? i will assume my fair share of guilt on perpetuating this; i’m not specifically outgoing in these crowds either. but whenever i honestly go out on a limb and try to involve someone nearby in a conversation, i more often than not get an affected acknowledgement that says, ‘i’m going to pretend i didn’t quite here what you said, but at least nod politely and turn away’, or the occasional questioning glance that tells me i must have accidentally spoken in one of the alien tongues i’ve been practicing, because this person certainly can’t seem to understand how or why i would be talking directly to them.

i can even understand why people leave as soon as the encore ends. it feels final. who would want to stand around a room from which all the energy has purposefully just been used up? as much as i’d like to mingle with the crowd afterward, i’m basically with them in this urge to exit the room just like the artists exit the stage — on a high note right at the end of the show.

one solution would be more time between sets, which admittedly gets old, but this is probably exactly because there’s nothing to do in those intervals if no one wants to talk to you, so you’d rather they got on with it. maybe it’d be fine if there were some air of socialization instead of just anticipation for the next act. but then you’re taking the emphasis off the artists and into the crowd, which maybe isn’t the right idea either. i’m perhaps equally annoyed with people that go to shows and don’t seem to even care at all about the fact that there are bands pouring their hearts into playing music for them.

a smaller step would be at least not to play deafening filler music between sets, which some places are guilty of, and which drives me insane. i’m willing to submit to ear damage and having to suspend all conversation to see a band i like do what they do, but please don’t cause me auditory pain from a recorded track, as well as making even the least involved conversation a matter of shouting into someone’s ear. that’s just unneccessary. but, the clubs that don’t make this mistake still never leave any real social time in the mix, and like i said before, maybe they shouldn’t. the show is and should be about the bands. it’s not a play date.

which is why i have a better solution. if the clubs themselves don’t seem to want to do this, i’ll just have to sweep in and start my own business. a bar/cafe either above, next to, or across the street from all the venues i frequent, where it is essentially established tradition to migrate from the show to the bar afterward. i don’t see why clubs don’t do this already, if they could potentially capture another few hours’ worth of drinks sold after the usual 11:30-midnight closing number, at a time where people are more likely to get drinks to pass the time anyway without a stage show to distract them. they work around the fans’ need to end the concert experience by leaving the venue room, but capitalize on their desire to stretch the night out, because i refuse to believe that all these 20-somethings go right home afterward at only 12am. this way they could all just do it in one place and only increase business for the club, right? and of course people like me would reap the endless benefits.

my dissatisfaction doesn’t all just stem from wanting to meet girls either, i swear. it just feels like this potentially rich array of like-minded people is wasted because everyone’s afraid to talk to each other. so i’m hoping you don’t mind if i bump into you at the next show and try to say something, heaven forbid. but if you do, the beauty part is that you can ignore me completely and it won’t even seem out of the ordinary.

it’s seemed to me like all i’m writing any more are movie reviews broken up with the occasional book review. i’m getting kind of sick of that (even though i plan to write a few more in the next couple days), because it feels boring and repetitive, and i only know so many adjectives. so if it’s okay with you, i’m going to stick mainly with things i have a strong opinion on as far as write-ups. maybe i’ll just make a little sidebar thing for netflix ratings for all the other stuff i just watch to pass the time (examples: chinatown – 3, the ring – 3). i don’t know really. if i upgraded to moveable type i could do a whole separate page and all that badass stuff, but guess what, i don’t really want to right now.

anyway, as the other part of the equation, i need to tell more stories and write down more ideas and funny things i see. maybe i should complain more about girls, but maybe not. regardless, more writing hopefully. i think i should have a little more free time coming up this month, so let’s hope it works out.

all the same, there should still be a show/cd review up later or tomorrow. it’s not like i’m giving them up for lent or something.
